Descriptive: My photo is descriptive because it simply displays balloons with no true explanation behind them. The viewer is intended to mearly recognize that the balloons are for a 21st birthday, but not know any real meaning to the photo.

Explanatory: This photo taken by Brian Knott features a compilation of surfer, Jesse Mendes, at the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, CA (2017). The photo provides an example of explanatory photography beause it explains the sequence of motions taken for the surfer to acheive a 360.

Interpretive: My photo is interpretive because it simply shows two figures in a snowy environment, but it is up to the viewer to interpret the deeper meaning behind what is going on in the photo, as in who the figures are and what they are doing.

Aesthetically Evaluative: My photo is aesthetically evaluative because it presents a landscape with multiple different aesthetically pleasing features. The sunset in the background as well as the snow covered houses add elements of beauty to the photo.

Ethnically Evaluative: This photo by Jeena Metzger represents how someone struggling with an eating disorder feels bound or trapped. The use of measuring tapes to represent shackles or handcuffs allows the viewer to acknowledge the painful emotion that the person photographed is experiencing.

Theoretical: This photo taken and edited by Annegien Schilling is theoretical because it utilizes photography as well as photo editing to show meaning behind the image. The girl in the photo appears sad, but we see through theoretical editing the reasoning behind her emotion.

Multimodal Presentation - Anna Gaskell

Synopsis of Multimodal Presentation: For my presentation, I have chosen the photographer and filmmaker Anna Gaskell to review. Gaskell creates what she calls, "elliptical narratives" which are a series of photos that tell a story through the viewer's own interpretation. Gaskell's series' that I chose to review reflect a theme of the classic story, Alice in Wonderland, centered around young girls meant to depict Alice in different scenarios. Gaskells photos each display the theme of childlike nostalgia, contrasted with an unsettling ominous vibe.

My new perception of photography: I have never before seen a series of photographs portrayed through a story telling manner that is up to the viewer's interpretation, such as Gaskell's elliptical narratives. Gaskell's work helped me see that photography can have contrasting light and dark themes such as those seen in her series'. Gaskell's series' also taught me that photos can seem extremely realistic, while still falling into the category of theoretical photography such as the photo of the young girl floating in mid air. Growing up as a horror movie fan I've always loved surrealism in art/photos, and Gaskell's work really caught my eye as her photos are beautiful yet slightly disturbing.
